Area History
Founded in 1966 and incorporated in 1978, Prescott Valley lies at the foot of Glassford Hill, a long-extinct volcano. In the 1880’s Glassford Hill, named after Colonel William A. Glassford, was used as one of several U.S. Calvary heliograph stations located throughout Arizona. Heliograph stations incorporated mirrors used to reflect Morse code to one another.
Meanwhile, the Fain family, originally from Kentucky, settled in the Camp Verde area and by the early 1990's, owned the land now known as Prescott Valley and formed the Fain Land & Cattle Company. In 1966, Prescott Valley was founded and incorporated 12 years later. Population has grown from a mere 600 in the early 70's to over 16,000 today.
